We all want a flat stomach and if you are anything like me, you’ll spend time every day trying to get those super model abs. But do the exercises incorrectly and you could be doing more damage to your body than good.
Here are some tips to keep your tummy trim while keeping your neck and back safe at the same time.
Protecting your neck
The best way to protect your neck while doing ab exercises is to cradle your neck with your arms so that instead of having your hands behind your neck or ears, you are reaching right back to touch your back while resting your head on your forearms.
This works in a similar way to the ab exercisers that you see on home shopping programs but without the expense.
As an added bonus this also makes your crunches more challenging and you can reach a flatter stomach much faster.
Keeping Your Back Strong
You need to do back exercises as well as stomach exercises if you want to avoid injuring your back. Many times people who have strong ab muscles but weak back muscles can create an imbalance which can cause the spine to misalign or create lower back aches and pains.
Some good back exercises include dumbbell rows which work the lats (the muscles on either side of your body), back extensions where you lie on the floor and lift both your arms and legs up (like superman) and cat stretches where you kneel on all fours and arch your back like a cat.
Yoga is also great for strengthening your back muscles and realigning your spine and is especially effective to combating lower back soreness.
It is important to keep your whole body safe while doing your ab exercises. Not only will you tone your whole body at the same time, it will also injuries and soreness at bay.
