As someone interested in food, exercise and losing weight, one of the questions I’m most often asked is whether the Zone diet is a healthy diet to go on. So here is a bit more information about it so you can decide whether it is right for you or not.
Let’s first look at the facts. People are becoming more and more overweight and even obese all over the world. While this is due to a number of reasons, the most common is easy access to unhealthy processsed foods. And many of us just don’t get the exercise that our ancestors did. And of course, many of our favorite pastimes involve just sitting on the couch watching television or playing video games.
In 1982 Dr. Barry Sears created The Zone diet. Dr. Sears has studied the body and diet for many years at Boston University School of Medicine and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During his research he spent around 30 years studying what are called lipids and hormones called eicosandoids (they cause inflammation inside the body). An excess of these hormones are not good for the body and can lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases and even cancer.
He found that by looking at food the same way we look at drugs and their effects on the body, we could more effectively control our weight. His methods were so successful that he published his book The Zone in 1995. As of writing, his book has sold over 2,000,000 hardcover copies.
So how does the Zone diet work?
You use food to control the eicosanoids with the Zone diet. By eating a mixture of low fat protein, good carbs, and heart friendly fats in certain proportions you can help control your hormones and more importantly your health.
All of this might sound pretty complicated, but it’s actually quite simple to follow. The Zone Diet books all tell you exactly which foods you can eat and includes recipes and advice. If you follow the Zone diet, you will turn your body into a fat burning machine. Most important, you won;t feel hungry, because the types of foods you eat will make you feel full and will regulate blood sugar which will keep you from having cravings.
The good news is that most people who are on the Zone diet lose around 5 pounds in the first two weeks. It’s actually a very clean diet, in that you are avoiding the nasty processed foods and eating a more balanced mixture of protein, carbs and fats. The best way to start the Zone diet is by picking up Dr. Sears books at your favorite bookstore and following the advice inside of the Zone diet foods you should be eating.
